Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed. (Proverbs 3:13-18)
The wisest man to ever live, King Solomon, penned these words over 2500 years ago. Solomon knew firsthand that wisdom was the key to many of the desires of life including long life, wealth, and honor.
After Solomon was anointed king after his father David, God told Solomon in a dream that He would give to Solomon whatever he desired. Here was Solomon's response to God:
"Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?" (I Kings 3:7-9)
God was very pleased with Solomon's response. He was so pleased in fact, that He told Solomon that He would not only give him wisdom to govern the nation of Israel, but also wealth, honor, and long life.
So God said to him, "Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both riches and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life." (I Kings 3:11 - 14)
